Many LED packages: One MakersLED heatsink

People frequently ask what type of LEDs will fit on the MakersLED heatsink. An easy answer to that question is almost any LED package will work! The MakersLED heatsink was built to fit most LED packages so they land square on the t-slots. There are some LEDs with a mounting pattern that doesn’t line up perfectly with the t-slots. These LEDs will still mount to the heatsink, usually by applying a slight angle to get at least 2 holes to line up with the t-slots. While this isn’t picture perfect, practically speaking, it does the job. Below is a picture showing some common LED packages on the MakersLED heatsink.

Another question we get often is how many watts the heatsink can dissipate. The 92mm, 45.18 CFM (cubic feet per minute) fan provided with the MakersLED kit along with the MakersLED heatsink can likely cool up to 200 watts. However, if your fan were to ever fail (and most LEDs will outlast any fan on the market), at this wattage your LEDS would overheat and potentially burn out very quickly. We recommend running around 120 watts of LEDs per foot paired with the provided fan for optimal thermal management.
